In the Chamorro culture, I was raised to always respect nature and our elders. In our belief it is important to respect nature because there is always something other than the beautiful creation. As a fisherman, I was told by my ancestors to never disrespect the ocean and fear of it. We shouldn’t disrespect the ocean by making loud noises or not asking for permission.

It was a typical fishing day, the sun was out, and the water was calm. It was an exciting day to go out and spearfish as the water was super clear. They took a friend from the mainland to try spearfishing in Saipan. They went out on the reef and started doing their thing. The friend got excited for shooting a lagua (parrot fish). He then started calling out for my uncles to see his catch, but they were too far to hear so he yelled louder. Later, the water started crashing waves. As my uncle noticed he was yelling, it looked as if the friend was struggling to escape the waves. It was like he was drowning and everything became a panic mode and chaos. The friend started to apologize to the ocean and everything became calm. Although it became come, he knew to believe in the custom of respecting the ocean.
