It was about 11:00 at night, and Mrs. Jones was walking alone, when Roger ran up behind her and tried to steal her purse (pocketbook)
Roger tries to steal Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones purse and run, but he falls down. Mrs. Jones talks to him and he lies about trying to steal.
Yes'm, but it wasn't my intention to steal your pocketbook!

Mrs. Jones grabs Roger and drags him back to her house. Roger says he's sorry many times. She takes him to her house, tells him to wash his face, and cooks him dinner. He explains he wants money for blue suede shoes

ClimaxMrs. Jones leaves Roger alone while she cooks, and he tries to decide whether he should run or stay. He decide's to stay and not run.

Roger learns that Mrs. Jones has made mistakes in her life too. They talk about this over dinner. She tells him not to lie or steal anymore.
Its ok Rodger we all make mistakes to, next time, do not make the mistake of latching onto my pocketbook nor nobody else's because shoes got by devilish ways will burn your feet.
Mrs. Jones gives Roger the ten dollars to buy blue suede shoes and let's him leave. And she said 'Goodnight! Behave yourself, boy!'
