- Salva is a boy in the Dinka tribe. Salva and his friends are having a normal day at school. This shows he has a normal life.
- Rising Action 2
- The class hears gunshots and the teacher tells them to run into the bush. Salva wants to go back home but he knows it's not safe. This is the point where Salva's life changes for the rest of the book.
- Rising Action 3
- Salva and the other people he ran with form into groups. He tries to join the men's group, but is rejected. He joins the women and children's group and they sleep in a nearby barn. He wakes up and everyone is gone. He finds an old woman who takes care of him. After three days, the old woman says she is going to leave him. This builds suspense, since you don't know what will happen to Salva next.
- Rising Action 4
- A group of dinka and other tribes show up and decide to take Salva with him. They search for honey by following a honeyguide. Along the way, Slava meets a boy named Marial. Since they both have lost their families and are the same height and age, they immediately become best friends. This makes you feel glad for Salva. It's shows that when Salva loses friends, he makes more.
- The groups runs into to Salva's uncle. He becomes their leader and tells them to head to Ethiopia. While they are sleeping, Marial disappears. They assume he was killed by lions. The group heads to the Nile River. They build canoes out of reeds and sail across the river. Then, they cross the Akobo desert and Uncle gets killed by Nuer men. This makes you feel shocked and sad that Uncle and Marial are dead.
- 6 years later, Salva is in the Ethiopian refugee camp and the soldiers tell them to leave. Everyone tries to escape while the soldiers are shooting people. Salva becomes the leader of a group of boys and together they head to Kenya. 1 year later, Salva is going to many different camps. 4 years later, he learns English. Then, he sees his name on a list to go to America. This makes you feel glad for Salva.
