- Mattie went behind the men, but she decided to go back with Grandfather.
- Grandfather, please don't die. I can't lose you too. You are everything to me and always will be.
- A moment later, he died.
- Mattie decided Grandfather would be buried in his nightgown. She knelt beside his body and began to cry for the best man she had ever known.
- The next day, Grandfather's body was loaded onto a cart carrying corpses and buried.
- I can't believe you are gone. I don't know where to go, and I'm all alone.
