- Offred
- The main protagonist in the Handmaid's tale is Offred, a Handmaid living in Commander Waterford's residence in Gilead. Before the conception of Gilead, Offred had a husband and a daughter, whom she often describes in the novel. She, along with all women in Gilead, is subject to an extreme loss of identity at the hands of the government, as women are reduced to their ability to bear children. In this novel, Offred is supposed to be a representative of how almost anyone could potentially find themselves in this situation, and prompts us to think about how aspects of Gilead's government relate to the real world.

- The Commander
- Commander Waterford is in charge of the house, who has a handmaid, Offred, and Marthas assigned to him. He also has a wife, Serena Joy, though their relationship is not at all similar to a typical marriage. The Commander is some sort of Government official, however his role in the house is mainly to attempt to impregnate his handmaid, Offred. In the novel, the commander directly represents Offred's oppression, as he is the channel through which Offred is abused and mistreated.

- Aunt Lydia
- Aunt Lydia serves a teacher role in the Handmaid's tale, though the content which is taught is full of lies and propaganda, designed to brainwash women into conforming to Gilead's regime. She represents the governmental control which is imposed on young women, and helps the reader understand how the government has managed to achieve such extreme control over the people of Gilead.
