  • Glida: 1
  • None of y'all read that darn book ya hear me!
  • But why not sir?
  • This demonstrates how southerners reacted after "Uncle Toms Cabin" was released. Southern ministers specifically fought for people to not read it and even thought of the book itself as a sin. This eventually caused more people to be curious about what the book held and caused problems in congregations about whether or not this book should be allowed.

  • I must say I am impressed! This is very important for the Union!
  • Thank you sir!
  • In this scene, Lincoln recognizes "Uncle Toms Cabin" as one of the three most important factors for British support of the Union because it caused the English to see how corrupt the South was with their mindset of slavery. He also claims that the book itself was very descriptive about the slave situations as she, for example, used evidence. One effect is that the British did infact help the Union by providing support against the Confederacy which contributed to their win.

  • Change out of those fancy clothes immediately! I am now your God!
  • Yes Mas'r
  • This happens after Tom is sold out his previous plantation into Legree's. Legree is a tough woman who wants slaves to live in bad conditions. She demonstrates this by forcing him to change into ragdy clothes and making her his God, even though he is a true believer in Christ. This effects how Tom sees slavery as he first had a kind master but now has a very aggressive one.
