The author's purpose is to indirectly characterizes Jordan as selfish and does not care about other people's lives when she drives.
A week after Tom married Daisy, he began to cheat on her with another woman. As he left a hotel, "Tom ran into a wagon on the Ventura road one night, and ripped a front wheel off his car." His reckless disregard for others caused the "girl who was with him got in the papers, too, because her arm was broken" (Fitzgerald 77). The author's purpose is to show how careless choices declined his morality and created conflict between him and others.
Materialism drove Myrtle Wilson to run out in the middle of the street. Since Daisy was speeding in Gatsby's car, she did not see Myrtle and hit her. Once the news got out, Tom whimpered, "That G** D**** coward! He didn't even stop his car" (Fitzgerald 141). The author's purpose is to connect the wreck to reckless disregard for others because even though hitting Myrtle was an accident, not checking up on her was a decline of their morality.
