- On March 30th, 1867, the United States reached an agreement to purchase Alaska from Russia for a price of $7.2 million. Secretary of state William Seward signed this deal
- The USS Maine was a United States Navy ship that sank in Havana Harbor on February 15, 1898, contributing to the outbreak of the Spanish–American War. Yellow Journalism led to believe that the Spanish were responsible.
- The Panama Canal is a waterway in Panama that connects the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans. It is 84 km long and it took 10 years (for the US) to build.
