Captain, there are lights on the shore, people are already here!
Back off intruders!
What is that? Is it a ship? That's a weird ship
We should blow a warning horn. If they answer, they want a fight, If not we can see who they are.
The explorer Abel Tasman had been sailing for months. It had been so long since they had seen the land of Tasman Island, and they were beginning to think that there were no more lands to explore when Land, Land the cry rode across the wind and the crew rejoiced at the sight of unexplored, and uninhabited lands, or so they thought.
Fights break out!
But as night fell on this new land, lights began to appear across the shoreline. There must have been people on the land! Who had come there before the sailors, and would these people be friendly? Tasman sent out a smaller ship to see who these people were. They blew a horn in welcome and Tasman blew one back to say hello, or so he thought.
Fire the canon!
The people on the land were the Maori. And that friendly horn. That was a warning, and by blowing a horn back Abel Tasman had accepted the challenge of a fight! The Maori warriors climbed into a waka and left the shore for battle, and what seemed like the enemies' waka left their ship too. But that was just the small ship to see who they were. Things were starting to get bad fast.
The end
The end
The Maori rushed onto the ship and killed all the Europeans on board! Abel Tasman could believe his eyes. How dare these intruders to barge onto the ship and kill his crew!
So in a rage Captain Abel Tasman ordered a canon to be fired at these horrible people and they fleed into the night. He named the place murders bay because once he came out of the rage, he realised what a horrid thing he had done.
