Storyboard Text

  • Since 1816 the Dutch had directly ruled Indonesia, which they called the Dutch Indies, though they had occupied parts of Indonesia as early as the 17th century.
  • During WWII, Japan needed to gain support from the local Indonesian population to support the Japanese war effort. To be able to gain the support, the Japanese released Indonesian nationalist leader Sukarno from prison. They had a deal, Japan would get support from the local Indonesian population, while Sukarno wanted to use Japan to gain independence for Indonesia from the Dutch.
  • We surrender !
  • During WWII, Japan had surrendered.
  • Sukarno declared Indonesian independence on August 17, 1945, two days after the Japanese surrender in WWII.
