One major theme of "The Monsters Are Due On Maple Street" by Rod Serling is that Mankind is its own worst enemy. One Example would be when everyone went against Les Goodman. This is true because as soon as Charlie said Les Goodman was guilty everyone started to turn against Les Goodman just so they would have someone to blame for all of the weird stuff that had been going on in such a small town. Another piece of evidence would be when Charlie shot Pete Van Horn. I think that Charlie had only shot him because he was scared and looking for someone to blame/turn on. However, by killing him, Charlie took an innocent man's life away just because he jumped to conclusions, and as soon as Charlie shot him everyone turned against him thinking Charlie had something to hide. Another piece of evidence could also be when the townspeople accused Charlie and he blamed it on Tommy just so he wouldn't look guilty of being the monster. They also turn against Tommy for a little saying stuff like that's how he knew what was going to happen. All of these show that people will blame whoever just so they don't have to face reality. Overall, all these pieces of evidence support the theme that mankind is its own worst enemy.
