- Paul realizes that his life will be miserable when the war is over. So on a day with very little battling, a day literally called "All Quiet on the Western Front" Paul dies to unknown causes, but is relieved that the end finally came.
- The theme or main ides of this story is that war effects soldiers terribly, whether it be them getting shell-shocked or having PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder), or just having miserable lives when fighting finally stops because they can't get jobs.
