The government should give more power to the people!
Oh please, the people can starve! No Bread for them!
Meeting of the Estates General
Each Estate gets ONE vote!
The French Revolution took place between 1789-1799 in Europe. During this time in europe they had estates which were different levels of society. So, there was the the 1st estates which consisted of people of religion and part of the church. Then there was the 2nd estate who were the rich nobles. The final estate was the 3rd which was the middle class, the poor, and the peasants.
The Tennis Court Oath
New Constitution
There were five factors that led up to the outburst of the French Revolution. The 3rd estate started to grow resentment to the higher estates and wanted a fair government. Then new ideas for the government stated to arise and the economy started to fall. Europe at the time was ruled by King Louis XVI who was a very weak and inexperienced leader. The lower class started to starve because there was a food shortage because of Marie Antoinette, King Louis's Wife.
The Storming of the Bastille
The Estates-General was a meeting which brought in representatives from each estate. Each estate got one vote which was very unfair to the 3rd estate since they were 97% of the population compared to the two higher estates who were only 3%. The National Assembly was the formed which passed laws and reformed in the name of the French people.
The Great Fear
The National assembly found themselves locked out of their meeting room. So, they broke down the doors into the indoor tennis room and refused to leave unless a new constitution was drawn up.
Rumors went around that KIng Louis XVI was going to use military force to dismiss the National Assembly. Also, foreign troops were coming to Paris to attack French citizens because of this the 3rd estates started to gather weapons. A group of citizens stormed the Bastille in search of gunpowder and arms. They overwhelmed and killed many guards and carried around their heads on pikes. The storming of the Bastille became a nation day representing Frances freedom, similar to the 4th of July in the United States.
More rumors spread through France that Nobles were hiring outlaws to terrorize peasants which caused peasants to become outlaws themselves. They would use tools usually from their farms to break into nobles' manors and destroy documents that bound them to feudal dues.
