- Jean observed the soaring flight of an albatross. He was fascinated to see the flying bird floating and wheeling without any apparent exertion

- He killed the albatross and studied its wings.

- he constructed “The artificial albatross” : 50 foot wingspan wooden and cloth. There were hand-operated levers to change angle of wings and foot-devices to change the position of tail.

- He launched his machine off a horse drawn cart and was pretty successful - it flew for a height of 100 m and for a distance of 200 m.

- he broke a wing but was unharmed. the attempt was pretty successful overall.
