The play begins as Horatio, Barnardo and Francisco attempt to make contact with the ghost, who they believe to be the ghost of King Hamlet and fail. They then decide to inform Hamlet in the hopes that the ghost will talk to them.

Hamlet continues to mourn for his father despite his mother's remarriage and uncle's asension to the throne. He is denied the ability to leave in Germany. Ophelia is ordered to stop courting him. The terrified three tell him about the ghost and Hamlet follows the ghost to learn more about it. The ghost reveals himself as Hamlet's dead father and tells Hamlet that his brother King Claudius murdered him. Hamlet swears revenge against Claudius.

Those around Hamlet describe and experience the insane behavior he has decided to don after the revelations of the ghost. His mother and father become concerned. Polonius hypothesizes that love, more specifically Ophelia's rejection, has driven Hamlet insane and makes a plan with Claudius to confirm or deny the hypothesis. Rosencrantz and Guildenstern attempt to figure out the cause of Hamlet's insanity on orders of the King and Queen and mention that a trope of traveling actors has passed by. Hamlet makes the plan to figure out if the Ghost has told the truth by adding details from his fathers murder into the play that they are going to perform.
