  • French Revolution Introduction
  • Factors that led to the Revolution
  • Meeting of the Estates General
  • The French Revolution started in 1789 and ended in 1799. This was a time when the commoners of France rose up against the monarchy.
  • The Tennis Court Oath
  • Some factors that led the revolution were the poor economy, food shortages, weak leaders, lower class resentment, and new ideas of government like abolishing the monarchy.
  • The Storming of the Bastille
  • The Estates General was an assembly of representatives from each estate that met to approve the new tax. Although each estate had one vote each, the percentage of people in each estate was very uneven. The majority of the whole population was in the third estate. Only 3% of the population was from the first and second estate. Therefore having one vote for each estate was very limiting to those of lower class.
  • The Great Fear
  • This was a three day event in which the National Assembly, also known as the third estate, got locked out of their meeting hall in Versailles. They broke into a tennis court and pledged to stay there until a new constitution was written.
  • On July 14, 1789, the third estate was urgently trying to protect Paris from foreign threats. This resulted in a mob that stormed the Bastille, a Paris prison, in search of gunpowder. Then they killed the guards and stuck their heads on pikes to parade them around the streets.
  • The rebellion spread to the countryside. The peasants took pitchforks to the nobles' houses, and burned them. This is a time where peasants became outlaws themselves.
