- A young German student returns to his lodgings in a old part of Paris.
- Glida: 2
- The young student spent time studying at Gottingen a German college and spends most time in solitude.
- Glida: 3
- The young student is tortured with ideas of evil spirits and deities.
- Glida: 4
- The young student's friends send him to Paris to introduce him to the world, however he arrives in the height of the French revolution.
- Glida: 5
- The student is horrified by these things and spends most time alone in an old apartment finishing his studies.
- Glida: 6
- The student also spent much of his time alone in the libraires of Paris.
- Glida: 7
- One day getting back from the library, the student encountered the guillotine at night.
- Glida: 8
- The student sees a figure sitting at the bottom of the guillotine.
- Glida: 9
- I have no friend on earth.
- The student talks to the woman thinking she is a mourner of a victim of the guillotine.
- Glida: 10
- I offer you my humble dwellings.
- The student offers the woman, who seems to have no home, to stay with him.
- Glida: 11
- The student is ashamed of his desolate and dirty house, but the woman stays. The student is very attracted to her beauty.

- The student and the woman talk for a long time, and eventually the student decides to ask her to be his wife.

- The Woman agrees, and the student leaves her and goes to bed.
- Glida: 14
- When the students sees her the next morning, she is dead and as cold as a corpse.

- The student calls the police, and they arrive to console him.
- Glida: 16
- The police tells the student that the woman was guillotined yesterday. The man screams, convinced a spirit was controlling the body.
- Glida: 17
- The student goes insane and ends up in a Paris mad house.
