  • Conflict
  • The major characters in The Breadwinner are Parvana, Mother, Father, Parvana(Ellis 25) Shauzia, (Ellis 89) and Ms. Weera (Ellis 77).
  • Theme
  • when you work hard, you will not be disappointed.
  • One main setting in this book is Parvanas house (Ellis 16). Since girls are not allowed to leave the house without a boy, everyone in the family, except Parvana, is confined to the house (Ellis 15).
  • Social Issue
  • A conflict in the story is the one between Parvana and starvation. Parvana has to even dig up graves to keep her family from dying (Ellis 103). Parvana risks being caught by the Taliban when she dresses up as a boy (Ellis 61).
  • Symbols
  • When you work hard, you will not be disappointed is a theme because it tells you that when you persevere, anything can happen. The Bread Winner has this theme because Parvana worked hard throughout this book and was never disappointed. When Parvana dug up bones, she was immpressed by the money that she made (Ellis 99).
  • The social issue in this book is that girls are being mistreated (Ellis 16). Girls are not even able to leave the house without a man (Ellis 17). This is not acceptable because people should be treated equally.
  • The presents in the book from the lady in the window, represent a glimmer of hope in her bad days (Ellis 85). The gifts always appear in times of struggle, like the time when Parvana thought that she found her father, but it was a stranger (Ellis 85).
