Storyboard Text

  • At the time the British had developed a way to decode German messages, and unbeknownst to Zimmermann his secret telegram had been intercepted and decoded by British intelligence. The British held on to the information because they did not want the Germans to know they found a way to decode their messages. Ultimately, the British sent out the note to Wilson, in hopes of swaying American public and political opinion into joining the war against the Axis powers.

  • United States POV
  • from Germany to Mexico
  • Mr.President, the British have intercepted and decoded a German telegram to Mexico. It seems very urgent sir
  • I cannot believe this !
  • Despite the shocking news and his resentment for breaking the Sussex Pledge, Wilson was still hesitant about declaring war since he had maintained pacifist sentiments and neutrality for the US. Wilson had to consider other factors, meaning he was not going to declare war....yet.

  • SECRET GERMAN MESSAGE DECODED BY THE BRITISH
  • On March 1, 1917, the News were released by the press and everyone had eventually heard about the Zimmermann Telegram and Germany's intents..
  • Zimmermann Telegram!German-Mexican Alliance news
  • March 19, 1917: The public opinion was very mixed at the time the news went public. Pro-German and anti-British had protested that the news were a mere scam, however the doubts about the authenticity of the telegram was pushed aside when Arthur Zimmermann delivered a speech admitting the telegram was genuine.
  • The public knowledge of the Zimmermann telegram and the German-Mexican alliance conspiracy led to an almost immediate change in the general Public opinion into anti-German and Pro-war.
  • I cannot believe the audacity! we have remained completely neutral and yet Germany always finds a way to look for trouble. I say we go to war once and for all!
