- Antonio José discovers, already an old man, that he can read. Reading opens a new world for him in a village where almost no one reads.

- In his hut, the old man reads slowly with the help of a magnifying glass. For him, reading is a ritual that brings him peace.

- Reading in the Jungle
- During the expedition, he reads aloud to the others. The men don't understand the stories, but for him the novels are still a refuge, even in danger.
