- I'll ask her to sit with me and my friends at lunch!

- There's a girl at school who won't talk to me. I tried to invite her to sit with me and my friends at lunch, and she just starred and looked at me like a deer in headlights.
- I also saw her on the bus, and I said hi to her, and she just waved at me, and then turned back around.
- Glida: 19
- Of course not honey. You were just being nice.
- Did I do something wrong or offend her?
- Glida: 20
- There's a condition called Selective Mutism that causes someone to get so overwhelmed, or nervous that they physically can't speak or move. It's because they're so frozen in fear that they look like a deer in headlights, like you said the girl was doing.
- She's not trying to be mean or not respond to you, she just can't control her speaking, if it she gets too overwhelmed. That's probably why she waved to you on the bus too. She's in a new setting that she's not totally comfortable in yet, so you just have to be patient with her.

- Well, I struggled with this as a child too, and it always helped me to get away from the place that was overwhelming me. Maybe ask her to sit with you outside for lunch tomorrow. It might make her feel more comfortable in talking when she's not in a crowded place.
- So what do I do to make her feel more comfortable?

- Just remember to be yourself, it'll help her feel more comfortable.
