Allow me to share the experiences we went through before I achieved this historical victory against the dictatorship's rule.
Members of congress, it is an honor to present to you the excellent President of the Republic of the Philippines, President Cory Aquino.
Mr. Speaker, Senator Thurmond, Distinguished members of Congress. A pleasant day!
He was imprisoned in a military camp in the north, in a small, almost airless cell. They stripped him bare and held a midnight execution threat over his head.
The fortitude and faith he shown through his death, however, were the only means by which my nation was able to rise again and achieve freedom.
I left America in mourning three years ago to bury Ninoy Aquino, my husband. To put an end to his nagging dream of Philippine freedom, I believed I had also left it behind.
I'm back in office today, leading a free people.
Thus started the movement that eventually led me to the Congress of the United States, the most historic home of democracy.
A whole nation paid tribute to Ninoy by burying him, a heroic and unselfish deed that brought credit to a country that was ashamed of itself.
I am now responsible for continuing to provide our people with the democratic alternative.
