- The orphanage placed children in unfit foster homes.
- Bud is mistreated by the Amoses; Todd starts a physical confrontation and Mr. and Mrs. Amos lock Bud in the shed.
- Herman E. Calloway believes that Bud is up to something and therefore refuses to engage with him or believe they are related.
