  • The Education Reform started in 1796 in Massachusetts. Today we will be taking a tour of a school here in Massachusetts.
  • Ok, everyone this is the first classroom! have a seat and listen.
  • Hi I am Horace Mann. We never had public schools before I created them because of taxes. That's why we only had private schools and tutors.
  • Students this is the science room! We will be learning about what the reform did for others.
  • When the public schools first opened only boys were allowed to go. As time went on colleges and now public schools accept girls. At school they learned how to read and write kind of like you.
  • What is the Education Reform? The education reform started in 1796 by Horace Mann. Horace Mann wanted to start public schools so everyone could go to school and not just the wealthy.
  • When I used to go to school it was with an underpaid teacher in a one room school house with sixty students. That's why I created public school, so that way teachers could be trained with less students.
  • We are so grateful that you created this school so we can learn new things each day!
  • Why did we need a reform during this time? We needed this reform to teach kids how to be good citizens. When kids weren't going to school they were setting off fires and stealing. What were the conditions? When public schools first started only boys were allowed to go they were still not accepting the girls.
  • Thank you so much for the field trip around the school you created, we had such a good time!
  • Thank you for taking time to listen to my story. I had such a great day!
  • This reform movement made it possible for all kids, girls and boys, even adults be able to go to school. Horace Mann was the one who started this movement, he said that when he was younger he only went to school ten weeks out of the whole year. As schools got bigger over the country it impacted a lot of people because they were learning basic skills.
  • Hi Sarah, I'm so glad that you could come and talk again. I just wanted you to tell me about you experience as a teacher during the reform.
  • Of course! During the reform, I had to do a lot. I  had to do lot's of training to be able to work at the public schools. I was also trying to get girls accepted into the schools. Helping new students learn was the best parts!
  • Who was the Reformer for the Education? It was Horace Mann. When he was younger he only went to school 10 weeks a year. His parents weren't rich enough to send him to private school, so he decided he wanted to change that. When he was older he started a public school in Massachusetts. Then the north and south started creating public schools.
