The Trauma
I'm very sorry John, but your parents didn't make it.
Unable to Cope with the Pain; Seeking Relief
Consequences Lead to More Emotional Pain
I'm sorry, but you have to leave. I have to think of what's best for the children!
Fine by me, I have alcohol to help numb this pain too.
According to the trauma theory of addiction, all addictions are rooted in some form of trauma that usually occurs during childhood. Here, John is only a young child when he is told that his parents have passed away, leaving him with substantial emotional pain
Unable to cope and handle the traumatic experience of losing his family emotionally, as John grew up, he turned to alcohol. Every time he thought about their deaths, he desired something to take his pain away. He knew drinking so much was wrong, but he needed relief from the emotions inside of him that he did not know how to control or handle. Drinking alcohol left him numb to the pain for a little while.
As John got older and married and had children, he continued to drink because he could find nothing else to make the pain the he experienced so young go away. Day after day, he sought relief in drinking, even drinking and behaving inappropriately in front of his wife and three children. His wife eventually saw him as a slave to the bottle, and kicked him out, although it deeply saddened her and her children. This only made his emotional pain worse, and the cycle began again.
