Modellering gör det möjligt för oss att känna till vad och varför något händer. Konceptuella modeller är delade och uttryckliga representationer eller analogier av fenomen och används av forskare för att hjälpa dem att förstå världen runt oss. Modeller används inom alla vetenskapsområden och erbjuder externa versioner av mentala koncept. Modeller är inte en perfekt representation; de är en förenklad version av ett system som belyser vissa områden samtidigt som man ignorerar andra.
