- Edward learns how to deal with losing those that he has come to care deeply about. Perhaps his most devastating loss was when Sarah Ruth died. Edward cared so deeply for her.
- Edward's body and heart heal throughout his journey. One example of this is when he is thrown overboard and alone in the ocean, his heart is broken and mends again.
