- Arachne met an old lady and insulted her and the goddess Athene The old woman reveals herself to be Athene and accepts Arachne’s challenge to a weaving competition
- Arachne, weaves a scene that insults the gods, angering Athene. Athene destroys Arachne’s weaving out of anger.
- Arachne, out of anger and pride, threatens to hang herself
- Athene turns Arachne into a spider so that she can weave for the rest of her life
