- The Dollanganger family was very happy. They were envied and thought to be perfect.
- On his birthday, Christopher Sr., died in a car crash. Corrine took her children away with her to live with her parents.
- Corrine explains to the children that she has been estranged from her parents because of something she did when she was 18.
- Corrine's mother agrees to help them but the children have to stay hidden until Corrine can win over her father.
- The children stay hidden for months, having occasional visits from their mother and their grandmother who brings them food everyday yet despises them.
- The children play in the attic, making a paper garden. Cathy is suspicious of her mother and longs to escape.
