- The U.S. dropped an atomic bomb on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945. Roughly 140,000 people in Hiroshima's died, and 74,000 in Nagasaki. Tens of thousands died of radiation poisoning and their injuries. After the bombings, the Empire of Japan surrendered, ending the war.
