  • Thomas Jefferson supported Shays' Rebellion. He believed that occasional rebellion was necessary to keep governments in check and prevent them from becoming too powerful and oppressive. However, he also felt that the rebellion should have been peaceful and that violence should have been avoided if possible. Jefferson believed that rebellion was an important check on government power and that the people had the right to resist when their liberties were threatened. He famously wrote in a letter to James Madison, "The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.

  • Adams argued that they should be treated harshly. "In monarchy, the crime of treason may admit of being pardoned or lightly punished," he allowed, "but the man who does rebel against the laws of a republic ought to suffer death."He also called for jailing all who had taken part in what he clearly considered an unlawful rebellion.
