Weather Expressions in Spanish

Have students practice their weather expressions and seasons by selecting a representative image, categorizing it under an appropriate season, posing the question “What’s the weather like?”, and responding to it below each image. Since there are multiple possible weather expressions per season, have students target each one and place them under the appropriate seasonal column. Below are some of the most common expressions of weather in Spanish for each season.

El otoño:

Hace buen tiempo. / Hace fresco.

Hace viento. / Está nublado.

El invierno:

Hace (mucho) viento. / Nieva.

Hace (mucho) frío.

La primavera:

Llueve.

Hace sol. / Hace buen tiempo. / Hace fresco.

El verano:

Hace (mucho) calor. / Hace buen tiempo.

Hace (mucho) sol.

Expressing Dates: Days and Months in Spanish

This storyboard is designed to give students practice in expressing dates in Spanish. Have students select images to represent various holidays around the world. Next, instruct students to ask when the holiday is celebrated, varying the subject in order to practice different forms of celebrar as well. Students should use complete sentences in answering each question and pay attention to their conjugation of the verb.

Clothing Vocabulary Lesson Plan

To enhance student learning and comfort with weather expressions, ask them to relate weather expressions to logical clothing items. In the model storyboard, a friend is asking, “What are you wearing and why?” Students must use complete sentences, an appropriate weather expression, and appropriate clothing options to respond. In addition to weather expressions, this activity allows students to practice their conjugation of the verb llevar and their use of clothing vocabulary. According to skill level and interest, students may create either a simple, straightforward storyboard, or they may choose to research new clothing vocabulary and less common weather expressions.

For further advancement, ask students to research weather in other areas of the world at various times. The friend calling in the storyboard states where they are, the weather, and what, therefore, they are wearing. Then the student’s character responds similarly from their area of the world.

Spanish Weather Expressions In Context

This storyboard activity assumes that students have already learned months of the year, weather expressions, and the seasons. It also assumes students have learned the present tense conjugations of -er, -ar, and -ir verbs, as well as how to conjugate the verbs ir and jugar. The following activity provides opportunities for students to synthesize the targeted material.

Have students brainstorm a list of 8-12 pastimes. Instruct them to create a question with each, varying the subject, but always asking when the subject engages in the pastime. For each cell, have students incorporate imagery related to the pastime, label it with the appropriate season, and then include the question and response. The student must answer the posed question taking into account how it is asked and thus how it should be answered. Each time students should include the month, weather, and the appropriate pastime in a complete sentence.

As a paired activity, students can alternate being Student A and Student B. Student A states the season in a complete sentence and asks the question about pastimes. Student B must answer with the required material and in a complete sentence. Both students should write the given response.

Putting it All Together | Weather and Seasons in Spanish

This storyboard activity assumes that students have already learned how to express the date, weather, seasons, and seasonal pastimes. The last question in each cell is meant to expand connections further, asking what the student might wear that given day.

Since students have already learned all of the elements at this point, this storyboard asks students to put their knowledge together, relating one topic to the other. While it is designed as an individual activity -- suitable for assessment purposes -- this storyboard can also be used in pairs. Have students pose each question for their chosen seasonal image and provide the response. Weather, pastimes, and clothing have many possible answers and therefore may require more than one response.
