- The port of New Orleans was vital for trade and commerce. Additionally, transportation was made easy on the Mississippi River. Foreign powers stood a threat against America as long as they controlled that region, and in turn, America could inadvertently get tangled up in European affairs.
This is Thomas Jefferson
I really need to get a hold of that Louisiana Territory... there is just too much to worry about with other nations controlling it. It will also be very valuable for us.

Napoleon was dealing with many matters at this time, and his forces were spread very thin. This was a problem, because if it continued, he wouldn't be able to continue war with Britain. Napoleon had a large ego and pride to protect, and so he was looking for a cover story in order to pool his troops back to France. Eventually, the Louisiana Purchase serves as exactly this.
That pesky Toussaint "Croissant" L'Ouverture messed up everything!
Resources are running so thin! If this keeps up, I won't be able to win against Britain!
This is Napoleon

Oh Bumbershoot... Whatever will I do now?
I am now in control of this land, and will take it from you! You will do as I say!
Officer for the Spanish that monitors the port
(He speaks Spanish when he is scared)
You aren't allowed to trade or pass through here anymore... I am the boss!! You are a loser! HAHAHAHA!
Ay ay ay! Eres tan aterrador! Tu eres el jefe ahora... yo soy el perdedor!
In 1802, the Spanish, who controlled the port of Louisiana at the time, closed it to Americans. (Against Pinckney Treaty) Jefferson became even more concerned due to its detrimental effects on the economy, and issues with foreign policy.
Napoleon soon took control of the port from the Spanish

3) Oh my goody goodness! That small portion of land for only 10 million and TWO baguettes?! I'll give you the whole territory for only 5 million more... I love my baguettes!
1) How about this deal... 10 million dollars for a small portion of Louisiana, AND a baguette!
Jefferson sent a few ministers to negotiate a deal with the French, willing to pay 10 million for a small portion of land near Louisiana and Florida.
Voyage to Napoleon's realm and wager for the land I showed you. Offer no more than 10 million and a couple stale baguettes.
Yes Mr. Jefferson(synchronously)
2) I'll sweeten the deal and make it 10 million and TWO baguettes!

I need to find a way to gather my forces, but I don't want to show an opening for weakness!
2) Um... We spent 15 million.
1) ... How did it go?
4) Napoleon made an offer we just couldn't let go... we managed to get the whole entire territory!
3) WHATTTT! I TOLD YOU NOT TO GO OVER 10 MILLION AND A FEW STALE BAGUETTES!
5) Oh my god! I a going to be the greatest president ever... I just doubled the size of our nation!
The Louisiana Purchase doubled the size of the nation at the time, boosting Jefferson's public image. Later however, Jefferson would encounter legal obstacles regarding the purchase's validity within the Constitution. However, he gets the Senate to ratify the purchase. Now, lets give Jeff some time to process what he just heard...
