  • During middle and high school, I was never the most diligent student. Because I had come from Mexico, learning a new language was a major struggle for me; I failed many classes—especially English—partly because I wasn't a very good writer. I felt like I didn't belong at school simply because of the language barrier. I didn't know what to expect of myself since everything was so new, and I couldn't really read or write; the text looked like Chinese characters to me—I only understood the occasional word. I felt disappointed and believed I wouldn't amount to anything in life.

  • On my way home, I found myself overthinking everything, and that’s when I started looking for a way to improve both my writing and reading skills in the language. I felt really disappointed in myself because I’m a slow learner, but while watching YouTube, a Duolingo ad for learning a new language caught my eye. I decided to give it a try; I still struggled a lot, but I chose to take things at my own pace and seek help.
  • I sought help at school and was placed in an ESL class taught by Ms. Montanaro. I told her how I felt about not being able to read or write well; she was incredibly patient and helpful, advising me on what I could do to improve. Among other things, I started attending tutoring sessions, watching series with subtitles, reading more books, and writing more—even in my games. I followed all her advice, and it helped me immensely; I was able to make progress.

  • Seeking help from Ms. Montanaro wasn't easy; I faced plenty of challenges—mostly fear stemming from not knowing how to read or write. I felt insecure about everything, but little by little, I managed to master it by focusing on the things I enjoy. I ended up passing the English class, and the skills I gained—both in reading and writing and in learning the language itself—were incredibly helpful for my other classes.
  • I overcame my anxieties about the future—specifically regarding reading and writing—and left them in the past. I felt ready for whatever lay ahead and able to put my full effort into school, which is what I enjoy most. Thanks to Ms. Montanaro, I can do what I love—like reading manga—without feeling insecure about a new language, and I can pursue the things I truly love.
