- Hello and welcome back to News Channel 7. My name is Chloe O’Neil and today we’ll be talking about the algae blooms in Lake Erie. Today we are doing two interviews, the first being with Marisol, and the second being a farmer Now let's head onto the scene with Lily Blackburn to talk with Marisol.
- Hello I am Lily Blackburn and today I am with Isabel. She is struggling to get clean drinking water because of an increase in algae blooms. Isabel, how are you currently getting clean water with everything shut down?
- My family is bringing me water but it takes them a few hours to reach me.
- Is this event reoccurring in your area?
- This happens around every few years, but we have seen a recent spark in algae blooms for the past few years which has made it reoccur constantly for the past 3 years.
- Thank you Isabel for answering my questions on this very real and many-sided topic. And all this has affected these communities in less than a month. Now onto our interview with our farmer.
- Hello I am Marisol Feliciano and today I am here with Farmer Rosol. Today, I will ask some questions about algae blooms affecting Lake Erie. The first question I have is what do you think of people trying to reduce the amount of fertilizers farmers are allowed to use for crops?
- \Well the fertilizer I use allows my crops to grow bigger, faster, and produces more food. So I'm against the reduction of fertilizers. These crops are my primary way of income and so I feel that I should be using as much fertilizer as I need.
- Do you know how the use of fertilizer affects communities? And did you know Algae blooms sprout due to nutrients like phosphorus and nitrogen?
- I’ve heard very little on the topic and don’t know much about runoff into Lake Erie, but I don’t think it has that much of an impact on our water.
