  • Yes James. Let me explain my understanding of a dependent clause.
  • Ashley, do you understand what teacher is saying about dependent clauses?
  • A dependent clause is a group of words that contains a subject and verb but does not express a complete thought.
  • Ohh, so they can't stand on their own as sentences??
  • EXACTLY. So for example:Because it was raining… What happened as a result of it being raining?
  • I don't know. It sounds incomplete to me.
  • EXACTLY. These clauses cannot stand on their own. Now another thing to remember is that they are called subordinate clauses.
  • So do they normally begin with subordinating conjunctions?
  • Because, If, After, Before, and some others.
  • Who said you weren't paying attention? Yes so anytime you see these words, they go together with dependent clauses.
  • OHH. Now I get it.
  • I hope you understand it better now James.
  • Yes I do Ashley. Thanks a lot.
