  • The Shadows Between Us
  • By: Tricia Levenseller
  • Setting
  • Protagonist
  • Lady Alessandra is the second-born daughter of a Lord, she one day is taken to the palace of The Shadow King. She originally wants to get the Shadow King to marry her so she can kill him however, she ends up falling in love with him.
  • Conflict
  • The Shadows Between us is set in a gothic-style palace in a kingdom called Naxosia. The palace is the Shadow King's palace as is described in the book as "positively gothic in appearance, with winged creatures resting atop the columns."(18) While the book never says what time period it's set in, based on the fashion, titles, and tradition I assume it is set somewhere between the Medieval era and the Middle Ages.
  • Plot
  • Alessandra is a strong, independent protagonist who has cunning ideas and strong ideals. Her motivation at the beginning of the book is to kill the Shadow King to get money, however as the book continues her motivation changes to wanting a true partner.
  • Figurative Language
  • Who killed the Shadow King's parents. While there are many conflicts in the book, the mystery of who killed the past King and Queen is the most driving one. As the book progresses many people are accused, including the main character of being the killer by the Shadow King, however when it is discovered that the Shadow Kings brother is the killer, it becomes a struggle between two brothers over power.
  • Climax- The climax of this story is when Alessandra runs back to the palace to warn the Shadow King that his brother is the one who killed their parents, and is now trying to kill him. Almost immediately after she says that the Shadow Kings' brother runs into the room with a sword, trying to kill the king. The SHadow King pulls out his blade and the two duel for the throne. The Shadow King wins the duel by killing his brother
  • Symbolism- One bit of Figurative Language I have seen in this book is symbolism. Very early into the book, there is a dog that is shown as very kind and sweet. This dog is the Shadow Kings' dog. I believe that the author used the dog as a symbol for how the Shadow King isn't as cold as he seems. At the beginning of the book, the Shadow King is described as looking cold and unbothered. However usually people have a softer side towards dogs, this is shown when the ebook says "The dog jumps to a standing position, tail wagging" (43) "And then I watch the dog trot over and drop the ball at the kings' feet." (43). The author uses this to show that the shadow king isn't really that cold.
