Wong's demonstration of identity challenges comes from her need to belong and fit in to what she believes to be "better" than Chinese culture. Wong shows this belief numerous times, "Nancy Drew, my favorite book heroine, never spoke Chinese" (Wong 3), and, "I did not want to be thought of as mad.. chaotic and frenzied" (Wong 4). As a young adolescent, Wong depicts what she thought honestly about Chinese culture. She did not want to identify with her Chinese roots because it was "embarrassing" for her. Wong much rather preferred being American. Even in her favorite English book, she thinks "Well if Nancy Drew doesn't speak Chinese, why should I?" This thought process of hers lead her to being not confident in who she is and a lack of understanding her roots.
Why doesn't my mom just listen to me? Being Chinese is so embarrassing!

Due to her immigrant mom's expectations, Wong was forced to go to Chinese school because she believed that this was what would lead her to success. This was all she knew and what she was taught. But, Wong believed something completely different, "When I spoke English, people said encouraging words. Even the people in my culture would say that I would do well in life" (Wong 4). Under their two different ideas of success, Wong was torn and felt as if she had to obey her mom in order to satisfy her. This caused her to have internal conflict, and resulted in a cultural divorce. She did not see any benefit in embracing her Chinese culture so she cut it off and chose to be "All-American."

All Wong wanted to do was go to American school; she dreaded Chinese school, thus making her question her Chinese culture. Wong states, "No amount of kicking, screaming, or pleading could dissuade my mother, who was solidly determined to have us learn the language of our heritage" (Wong 1). The mother demonstrates how important it is to her for her children to continue learning about Chinese culture to preserve it. But, in comparison, Wong does not want to embrace her culture and would rather fit the standards of her American school.
