The Nullification Crisis happened because of the Tariff of Abominations. Vice president Calhoun from South Carolina believed in the state's rights and say's to "Nullify". Later on causing huge economic problems.

You have taxed our state to the limit now we must secede!

November 1832, the Nullification Convention met it declared the tariffs of 1828 unconstitutional. South Carolina has been taxed over and over again with out a say and so the state decided to break apart from the U.S. (Secede).

South Carolina backed down from its threat of nullification. This event showed the tension between states' rights and federal authority, a conflict that would later contribute to the Civil War.
