- The force shown above is gravity. This is the strongest force because drag is not yet acting against it. This is because the lady has just left the plane. The force is then defined as unbalanced due to having no force acting against it. The motion of the women is gravity pulling her downwards.
- Parachute Opens
- The forces shown above are drag and gravity. Gravity is still the stronger force as indicated by the arrow, with the forces being unbalanced. This means the woman will be accelerating downwards towards the earth, gravity pulling her.
- Terminal Velocity
- The two force shown are gravity and drag. Air resistance has now become equal with gravity which means the two forces are balanced. Since the two forces are balanced, the woman has reached terminal velocity. The woman continues to move downwards, but at slower pace compared to before.
- Landing!
- The woman's parachute has now opened. The two forces are gravity and drag, but the parachute has allowed the air resistance to increase due to larger surface area. This means that the forces are now unbalanced with drag being the stronger force. The lady continues to move downwards, but at an even slower pace due to air resistance pulling against gravity.
- The lady has now reached the second stage of terminal velocity, with drag and gravity now being balanced forces again. This means she is moving towards the earth at a constant speed.
- The woman has now safely landed!
