Paul would call his mom as often as he could. He would tell his mom how he was doing, what was on his mind and what he's been up to...he would constantly experience racist episodes and she felt bad for him.

The night Paul died he was at his friends house playing poker across the street from Pauls house that his mom was renting with him. After Paul won his friend and him ended on good terms and Paul left so he could go to a party before he went home.

That night when Paul came home his mom heard him rummaging around, talking to someone on the phone, making food and watching TV. She was about to fall back asleep until she heard a thud. When she found him and the ambulance was called, "The case was closed. The file was hut and there was no follow-up. No one called Maryanne to let her know her son had died" (Pg. 172).
No! Please!! This can't be! There's no way he is gone! I can't believe this! This isn't real!!!!! I need to call the ambulance!
