- Alfredo who is engaged to Esperanza, does not seem interested in setting a date for their marriage and is no longer enthusiastic about their relationship.
- One evening he had gone neighboring with DonJulian. A young woman had met them at the door. He was puzzled that she should smile with evidentdelight every time he addressed her thus. Later DonJulian informed him that she was not the Judge's sister,as he had supposed, but his sister-in-law, and that hername was Julia Salas.
- The conflict starts with the interaction of Alfredo and Julia, and how their relationship grows more intimate as time goes by. Their closeness have reached to a point where Alfredo looks forward to visiting Julia than spending time with Esperanza.
- The trouble with you, Esperanza, is that you are-- hestopped, appalled by the passion in his voice.
- Why do you get angry? I do not understand you atall! I think I know why you have been indifferent to me lately. I am not blind, or deaf; I see and hear whatperhaps some are trying to keep from me. The bloodsurged into his very eyes and his hearing sharpened topoints of acute pain.
- He was not unhappy in his marriage. He felt norebellion: only the calm of capitulation to what herecognized as irresistible forces of circumstance and ofcharacter. His life had simply ordered itself; no morestruggles, no more stirring up of emotions that got aman nowhere. From his capacity of completedetachment he derived a strange solace. Theessential himself, the himself that had its being in thecore of his thought, would, he reflected, always befree and alone.
- Alfredo realizes that his infatuation with Julia is now a thing of the past. Alfredo's internal conflict regarding his feelings and sense of commitment is finally resolved when he realizes that what he felt for Julia was an infatuation which faded in the course of time.
