The Battle started on 1 July 1916 lasting a week till the 8th of July and the brittish suffered a large amount of casualties
A bombardment had started and the first wave of soilders had 90,000 walking towards the German trenches
They used planes to spy on Germans and to get information
The tank was used the first time on the battle field in the battle of Somme
There were 19,240 killed on the first day
