The word choice in "The Lottery" is simple words, these words create a calming image for the text. Jackson uses these words to help build up the suspense and it also makes everything in the village seem natural.

This text uses imagery immediately as it tells us in the first sentence that it was a nice summer day and how people were gathering and the children were playing around and shoving stones in their pockets

The style the author uses is figurative language in the short story showing us how she can make the story lead up to the tragic events.

The theme of the story is that everything is not always as it seems and even the brightest seeming things can be dark.
