The major cause of the Boston tea party is the "taxation without representation" and the American colonist thought it was very unfair.

They're goal was to agitate against the tax on tea.

The American colonist begin protesting on the taxes they got on tea.
Effect
They then threw 342 crates\chest of tea into Boston harbor.
On October 20, 1774, the First Continental Congress adopted the Articles of Association in response to the “Intolerable Acts” the British government had imposed on its subjects in the colonies.
They passed the coercive acts which, closed Boston harbor until the tea lost in the sea was paid for.
