Cuba's economy collapses in 1895 and they rebel. Spain decides to send 150,000 troops and their best general, Valeriano Weyler, to stop them.

Yellow journalism, exaggerated stories, urged America to intervene in the rebellion. President McKinley sent a battleship to protect the U.S., but it was bombed!
Even though Americans called for war, McKinley hesitated. Then he sent a list of demands to the Spanish, and they accepted all accept for Cuban independence.
This was a splendid little war.
McKinley finally declares war, and he starts with the Philippines. The U.S. destroys the entire Spanish pacific fleet. America next moves on to Cuba.
The U.S. navy surrounds and destroys the rest of the Spanish fleet while Roosevelt leads the attack of San Juan Hill, where they also destroyed the Spanish.

Spain signs the treaty of Paris, and even though the U.S. paid 20 million, they received Guam, Puerto Rico, and the Philippines. Finally, Cuba got independence.
