- Excommunications: In 1054, tensions between the Roman Catholic Church and the Eastern Orthodox Church led to a dramatic split. Cardinal Humbert, representing the Pope, kicked out Patriarch Michael I Cerularius of the Eastern Church. In response, Michael I Cerularius expelled Humbert and his group. This back-and-forth of excommunications marked the official separation of the two branches.

- Theological Disputes:Filioque Controversy: The Western Church added “Filioque” (“and the Son”) to the Nicene Creed, which changed the belief about how the Holy Spirit comes from God.
