  • The Monsters are due on Maple Street Theme:
  • One Major Theme of The Monsters are Due on Maple Street by Rod Sterling is that being quick to blame can be destructive. One example that supports this theme is on page 76, when Les Goodman's Car started and the residents of Maple Street blamed him instantly. This shows that Les's car turning on, (which he had no control of) people made an unreasonable guess that he was the alien/monster. Another example is that on page 83, Charlie shoots an anonymous figure that he thinks is the alien, but later finds out that it was Pete Van Horn. This shows that if you make one wrong assumption, it can ruin someone's life. A last example is 84, when residents of Maple Street blame Charlie for all the wrong accusations and throw rocks at him, causing him to bleed and find another false scapegoat that everyone believes. This evidence demonstrates that out of fear and cowardness, people make foolish decisions. In conclusion, suspicion and fear can lead to consequences for you, and the people around you.
