It is Odysseus' first time talking to his father in over 20 years after he left for the Trojan War. Odysseus lets his father know about the situation of the suitors, and he shows his wound to fully show that he is Odysseus. This moment resembles peace as they are having an emotional moment together.
"Father, I am your son, myself, the man you're seeking, home back on native ground at last! Let me tell you the news, but we must hurry" (24.357-361).
