Jackson strongly opposed nullification. He believed that if one state could ignore federal laws, it could lead to the breakup of the country. He sent troops to South Carolina and asked Congress to pass a "Force Bill" allowing him to use military force if necessary but In the end, the crisis was resolved peacefully with a compromise tariff, created by Henry Clay, was passed, gradually lowering the tariff rates, and South Carolina backed down from its threat of nullification. This event showed the tension between states' rights and federal authority, a conflict that would later contribute to the Civil War.
